The buffet spread such as satays,tandoori,breads,chinese dishes, noodles,roast lamb,cheese, salads & curries did not really interest me at all.

Although the desserts spread looked great, it was juz above average in terms of taste. Nothing that great so don't waste your money if you're just thinking bout desserts.

PS : they only served plain water & coffee/tea (i think)... no other juices/drinks included ( all have to be separately paid for)

After reading about Sri petaling seafood village from toosuperheroes we decided to give it a try. Usually, we will go to the seafood restaurants which are located near The Store, Sri Petaling.

When we reached the restaurant at 7pm (fri night), it was quite empty with only a few tables occupied. Most of the patrons were regulars there. As we were there the first time, we decided to ask the waitress to recommend to us the signature dishes here. We ordered Salted egg yolk crab, Fried Chiu pai tau fu (both are the restaurants signature dish), and belacan potato shoots.

They served a mango appetizer (sour and slightly spicy which was kind of nice) before the dishes came.

It didn't take long before they served the tofu and potato shoots. The fried tofu is nice and the potato shoots are good too. Next came the salted egg yolk crab.

The salted egg yolk crab is a disaster. It sucks!-RM40 per kg- The lousiest crab I ever tasted! This is a seafood restaurant, yet the seafood sucked. The crab is tasteless, the meat is powdery. The salted egg yolk did not coat the crab properly and the batter obviously wasn't mixed well enough. Compared to the salted egg yolk crab at Bali Hai(Gurney, Penang), Restaurants around The Store and King Crab (Kelana Jaya), the crabs here are below par. If this is their Chiu pai dish (Signature dish), then I reckon you not to try the other dishes

In conclusion, This seafood restaurant sucks for its seafood. The other dishes however, come in big portions and are tasty and cheap (Rm8 each for signature fried tofu and potato shoots). I despise restaurants who dont respect their own dishes and customers. This restaurant should instead change their name to Sri Petaling 'SiFut' restaurant!

ABC soup

ABC soup is a simple soup cooked with vegetables and meat. The usual ingredients are tomatoes, potatoes, onion and carrots, while the meat used is usually beef or chicken.

When I was small, my grandma always cooked this soup for me. Although the soup is thin and doesnt have a strong taste, it is still a good comfort soup.

Ingredients:

2 onions

2 potatoes

2 tomatoes

3 carrots

2 chicken breast
1.7L water.

Salt and peppercorn: to taste

Method:

To prepare ABC soup, peel and slice the onions, potatoes, tomatoes into quarts. Peel the carrot and dice it. Skin the chicken. Place all ingredients in slow cooker. Cook for 3 hours.

Restaurant Yang Kee (Beef Noodles) @ OUG

Last Sunday, we decided to go Yang Kee Restaurant located at OUG for breakfast. Yang Kee is on the same row as Stevens Corner( famous nasi kandar), opposite the dim sum restaurant. Besides being famous for its beef noodles, they also serve wan tan noodles, pork ball noodles, pork noodles and Yong tau foo (RM 1.00/piece).

We ordered one dry mixed beef and one soup mixed beef (RM 5.10/bowl), the dry noodles being the more popular. You can choose from five types of noodles (egg noodles, bee hoon, hor fun, lou shu fun and vermicelli), and then choose the base which includes (beef balls, pork balls, mixed beef, pork and wan tan).

As reviewed by other food blogs, the dry beef noodles are much tastier compared to the soup version. As I’ve previously tried the beef noodles from Penang (Port Weld), the soup here is slightly tasteless, while the dry noodles are springy and flavourful. They are also quite stingy in their ingredients (2 meat balls, 2 pieces of meat and tripe). I personally like the beef balls, which have a strong taste of beef.

The shop is fully packed on weekends and be prepared to wait even for take-aways.

Chu Yok Fun (Pork noodles)@ OUG

On Saturday, we went for the famous Chu Yok Fun (pork noodles at OUG), opposite OUG market. The shop is at the corner of the row of shoplots, beside the Hainanese chicken rice. Besides selling Pork noodles, there is also Penang fried koay teow, Penang curry mee, chicken rice, popiah, and western food.

As the pork noodles here is the most famous stall, we ordered 2 bowls of pork noodles, one mee hoon and another koey teow. Per bowl which cost RM4.50, consist of minced pork, pork slices, pork intestines and gizzards. Compared to the pork noodles I had in Penang, the noodles here slightly lack in taste. The soup is slightly above average and the ingredients used are fresh.

Besides pork noodles, they also serve it dry and they also serve seafood noodles for RM10.50.

Before going back, I Bought an egg tart and (Ham dan sou) lotus pastry. The egg tart is nice and crispy, while the lotus pastry is unsatisfactory, the crust is hard, paste is too sweet, and the egg yolk is too dry. The Penang curry mee seems to be selling out quite early. Will visit it again for the pork noodles and to try the Penang curry mee.

Recently tried a mini restaurant called Face to Face Noodles House located in Bandar Sunway ( shophouses next to Sunway Pyramid - adjacent to The One Academy ). Face to Face Noodles Shop has other outlets as well and specializes in Pan Mee. They also sell Sarawak noodles but have yet to try it because pan mee was their specialty after all.

The house specialty : Hot & Spicy Pan Mee (RM 5.30)

It comes with a bowl of clear soup (isn't that great but has a homey taste). It is served with some minced meat, fried anchovies, spring onions and an egg. You could choose from 3 types of noodles which are :

1. Thick

2. Thin

3. Pinch

However, the title of Hot & Spicy Pan Mee sure is deceiving as the pan mee wasn't spicy at all.. Those of you wanting to try something spicy might wanna avoid ordering this. But the taste was quite good for KL standard however still not able to beat the pan mee at Sri Petaling's pasar malam on Tuesday nights.

Meat Ball Soup (RM 3.80)

It consists of 10 porkballs (there's also chicken and etc.) and vege in it. Although not superb, the taste of home cooked soup is there..

Bubur cha cha (RM 2.50)

Desserts were also recently added onto their menu. This bubur cha cha is a coconut based dessert with yam, potatoes and some agar (jelly like substance). Taste not bad if you're having an itch for dessert and much better than the Jonko Street in Midvalley. You can serve it either hot or cold. There are also other desserts such as ginko&barley, mung bean, red bean etc etc...

AhWa Restaurant (Hokkien mee, wat tan hor, penang pancake)

After being introduced to Jalan 222's AhWa's hokkien mee by relatives a month ago, I've been visiting it every week! Restaurant Ahwa is located just behind Shell petrol station at Jalan 222. Due to the restaurants popularity, it is almost always packed on weekends. Besides their famous Hokkien mee and wat tan hor, their duck rice, fried chicken wing, lala, grilled fish and pancakes are pretty good.

We ordered Hokkien Mee for 2 ( Rm 12 for 2 ) and wat tan hor for 1 (Rm 6). According to my friend, there are 2 chefs here. One is the 'Sifu' and the other is the apprentice. Even though both serve tasty noodles, but the ' sifu's ' version is slightly drier than his apprentice. The Hokkien mee is delicious, rich in flavour, which has the dark soya sauce taste but not too overwhelming, along with the bits of lard. A plate of hokkien mee is never complete without sambal. The sambal here is superb, not too spicy or strong, and suits the hokkien mee just right. This place is so famous for its Hokkien mee that almost every table has a plate of Hokkien mee.The Wat tan hor however, is not that impressive, which I find is on par with many Restaurants around KL.

Little lim pancakes. The pancakes here are very good, Never overdone or undercooked and almost always crispy. They sell a variety of pancakes which include tuna, ham, cheese, peanut, sweetcorn, meatfloss, banana chocolate, etc. The ham, cheese and mayo pancake is my favourite (Rm3.90). The mayo they use is of the Japanese variety, which is tastier than the local mayonaise. Due to the long preparation, it is recommended to order before hand as it takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

(Kuri Iri Azuki Monaka) Red Bean Wafer Ice Cream

Another post on Shojikiya's ice cream! As you all know, I"m a fan of ice creams, therefore its a must buy every time I walk past Shojikiya. LOL.

The Red Bean Wafer Ice Cream

Compared to the Brown Sugar Taiyaki Ice Cream, The Red Bean Ice Cream slightly lacks in flavour. As the Brown Sugar has a strong taste.

As the name suggest, Monaka, which is a Japanese dessert. It is made using 2 slices of waffles sandwiching a spread of azuki beans, rice cakes or nuts. The ice cream variant of it which has a layer of vanilla in between slightly takes the taste away. So if you're looking for original azuki ice cream, you should try the ones from haagen daz. I think u can only find it in Cold Storage, as Malaysia's haagen daz does not sell azuki flavour.

Imuraya Brown Sugar Taiyaki Ice Cream from Japan

Just a short post on a small treasure I found today.... Was walking around the korean/japanese shop called Shojikiya in The Gardens, Kuala Lumpur where I usually hunt for ice creams when I stumbled upon this :

IMURAYA BROWN SUGAR TAIYAKI ICE CREAM

(doesn't look very tempting does it?)

Skeptical at 1st but still decided to give it a go.. and *bang* ... it tasted --GOOD--... I immediately ranked it my no.1 ice cream from Shojikiya ( I have tried quite a few flavours eg. green tea, vanilla, strawberry.. might do a review on them as well next time)... Dunno bout you guys but I just loved it... You can give it a try =)

The outside of the ice cream is wrapped with a FISH shaped charcoal coloured wafer.

The 3 layers inside it consists of :

vanilla/milk ice cream
a layer of chocolate in between
red bean paste

Pssssssssssstttttt..... I walked around the corner to Jusco, Midvalley and guess what??? The sell Japanese ice creams too for RM 5.50..So for those of you looking to save 40cents (hehe, every cent counts mer) can opt to buy from Jusco as well... HOWEVER, they only offer VERY LIMITED flavours (eg . vanilla and etc.) so be sure to check it out before hand..

Alright, will be back with a Korean food post soon.... I'm on a Korean/Japan food wave today because the queue for Sushi King RM2 Bonanza was just crazy and it got on my nerves for not getting to eat it... *argh* crazy queue extended for 3 whole shoplots after dat...

Btw, anyone knows any better ice creams from Shojikiya or any other brands??? Pls drop a comment if you do.. Can't wait to try all the rest....

LTH Cruise in Penang, Malaysia

Although this may be a semi food post, but it serves as an 'early warning' to people who are curious towards trying the LTH Cruise in Penang, Malaysia (based on own opinion and not biased)... Well, when you first think of a short getaway, may it be a romantic holiday or a 1 day trip after exams/work in Penang, LTH cruise might run across your mind as the cruise departs from Penang itself and is hassle free without any booking requirement (usually there's space, but you might want to make a reservation if you're really keen on going). You might also think that a cruise getaway is romantic holiday but boy, you're in serious trouble if you're thinking that.

Before I begin, let me first introduce what the LTH Cruise is all about. LTH Cruise is actually a gambling cruise that departs from the Penang pier (near esplanade) everyday at 10am and 9pm. As it is illegal to gamble under the Malaysian Law unless licensed to do so, the LTH cruise would sail from the Penang pier to international waters for gambling to commence. The cruise would then retun back to drop off its passengers at 8pm and 9am (the following day if you have chosen to depart at 930pm) daily. The price of the cruise is RM60 for day trips (depart at 10am) which includes 2 meals and RM70-80+ for night trips (depart at 930pm) which includes 3meals.

After paying RM60 for the ticket, we were asked to gather at the waiting area at the pier for a speedboat to bring us out to the cruise. As a person who went in aims of a nice short holiday and maybe to win some money, we were rather excited about this trip. So for amateur gamblers or even professional gamblers in Penang, this might be the solution for you instead of having to go all the way to Genting Highlands ( but still dun gamble too often la... no good... just to relax or play play can la). There's also another advantage of this cruise that is : those over 18 years of age are ALLOWED to gamble because its on international waters unlike Genting casino which only permits those above 21... However, I do have some cheeky underaged friends who managed to slip past the Genting casino guards unharmed who were below the age of 21 years old as they dressed up more maturely it seems (lets hope no bribing is done there...jk jk...lolz)...Nways, back to LTH Cruise...

When it was time, everyone was to line up and pass through customs in which they will check your ORIGINAL ID (so those of you who still bring a photocopy of your ic, pls rmb to bring the original one for this) - NO ORIGINAL ID, NO ENTRY - as well as scan your body for any dangerous equipment. After passing customs, the speedboat would then transfer its passengers on to the cruise itself..Looks 'not bad' from the outside. However, upon reaching, we were ushered to the lions bar where there will be a game of bingo, where the winner will win 70% of the sales of the Bingo ticket. A bingo ticket cost RM10 and usually there would be around a 100 tickets sold. There are 2 sessions for Bingo. One at 10am and another at 7pm.

The real gambling could only begin once we reached international waters as the casino starts. We could see that there were many frequent customers in the casino with gaming cards. Which I think u could use to redeem a free room, gifts, etc. The games provided in the casino included baccarat, blackjack, three card poker, Caribbean stud poker and slots.

The casino is located at the ground floor which is divided into two sides. One is the main casino, while the other is just a small corners for gamblers to play a very unique game. The small corner only has a game which is similar to those roadside gambling stall and lack in professionality as the 'dealers' are actually wearing t-shirts, jeans and are happily smoking away. The main casino is fine, but nothing compared to genting (in Malaysia).. Crown Casino in Melbourne and Jupiters Casino in Sydney, Australia is so much better as well... Far above the standard and the age limit is only 16 years and above...

Note : MUSKY ODOUR- The insides of the cruise emits a musky odour smelling like the butchery in the market especially the kitchen and the restaurant. The smell is really bad at those areas and is able to make people nauseas just from smelling it... - FOUL ODOUR ALERT- This certainly brings down the standard by half.(no kidding)....

Aside from gambling, the cruise has a rather disappointing buffet line. For a gambling cruise, I would expect at least something which would not fall much behind hotel buffet standard. Once i stepped the restaurant, what I saw was a sea of people all queuing up for the buffet, and the tables were all fully taken that sharing tables is a must if one wants to eat. The buffet serving was as bad as the odour and there was only 4 main dishes to choose from (chicken curry, belacan egg, cabbage, shellfish) even my universities cafeteria offer more than 4 dishes. There is also porridge and some common condiments along with it.The condiment of the porridge were placed in METAL POTS. Yes, Its metal pots not even in a proper bowl. Damnit. The metal pots really looked like potty from far. A 'specials' corner was set up. They served Wanton Mee as their lunch special but with NOTHING SPECIAL!!!

For those of you who like to take photos, don't have such high hopes for LTH Cruise.. Whenever people mention about cruises, my mind always picture those big Star cruises we see in movies with swimming pools, bars, jacuzzi etc etc... U get my idea... Or even a deck like in Titanic where we could stand on the edge and maybe take a photo or two of the beautiful sea scenery.....However, LTH Cruise actually BLOCKS up the passage way to the deck and therefore entry is restricted... *shattered* our hopes of at least having nice photos taken with the background or even the ship...Any ship-like memories that could be taken were mostly from the walkway where you can see the sea in the back as though you were at the seaside (den why go for a cruise?? wtf, right?).... Oh well, LTH Cruise.....

Overall, I still find Genting Casino much better than the casino in LTH Cruise. Genting casino offers class, quality and comfort while LTH Cruise is more convenient (only for Penangites)... However, if you're feeling the itch to gamble and pure gambling only, then just go for a try (mebe once??)... But its a never again for me if I had other choices....

Tasty Pot BBQ Steambot Buffet Restaurant at Sunway Mentari

My friends and I have been going crazy about buffets for the past month... We initially decided on Yuen bbq buffet steambot restaurant but upon arrival our spirits were somewhat dampened by its outward appearance.. The shop did not look impressive at all and so we drove around that area in search for a better bbq steambot buffet restaurant.. the sunway mentari area is supposingly the area with the most bbq steambot restaurants and indeed , we were suprised by the amount of bbq steambot buffet restaurant available...

After driving around, we finally decided on Tasty Pot BBQ Steambot Restaurant. It looked really nice from outside and the volume of tables set-up were much more compared to the other shops. We were one of the 1st few customers to arrive (business hours : 4.30pm-1.00am) at 5pm... However, upon arrival, we discovered that the grilled stuff were not prepared yet and only the refrigerated food stuff was available ( the selection was wide, btw)...We placed our orders and chose 2( chong qing spicy soup & soya bean soup) out of the 5 (chong qing spicy soup, soya bean soup, hk satin porridge soup, chinese herbal soup & thai tom yam soup) types of soup base available.. The chong qing spicy soup was quite spicy (those of you who cant take chili might wanna avoid it or you can scoup out the oil layer to make it less spicy) while the soya bean soup was initially weird tasting (imagine soya bean as a steambot soup???) but became much better after all the food stuff has been cooked in it..for those of you who are adventurous, you might wanna give it a go but for those who aren't, it might be better to stick wif the chinese herbal soup as most of the tables around us had ordered that soup base...lolz

Another disappointment would be the drinks that were NOT included in the bill.. We ordered chinese tea (only teas were refillable) and it amounted to around RM2 per person..

And so to make our money worth it, we started without hesitating... There were the prepared cooked food such as curry chicken, chinese soya chicken feet with peanut, fried chinese bun 'man tou', fried rice, fried noodle, sweet and sour fish ball, HONEY GLAZED CHICKEN WING and etc... Just for your information, the honey glazed chicken wing is a popular dish from Tasty Pot buffet and you can often see the waiters refilling the chicken wing ( this restaurant is quite efficient when it comes to refilling the food stuff).. Can anyone tell me why chicken wings are popular in bbq buffet restaurants (heard that Yuen buffet restaurant is also famous for its chicken wings)????????...Personally, the honey glazed chicken wing taste good but my favourite would be the fried chinese bun or we call in 'man tou' in chinese.. It is slightly crispy with a pinch of butter smell and goes well with the curry chicken *slurps*... However, if you wanna make your $$$ worth it, than don't go for it as flour can be quite filling... I got scolded for having too much of those... Oh well....

Moving on, the selection of balls are plenty in tasty pot bbq restaurant. I believe you know what kinds of balls you can find in a bbq restaurant. However, the wide variety made a good impression on me although i'm not really a big fan of balls. There is also a wide variety of vegetables available but this section is mostly ignored by the customers except for the ladies.

The seafood selection is also plenty in tasty pot as u can find crabs,prawns,scallops,mussels,fish,snails(don't know if its escargot) etc etc... Surprisingly, most of the seafood ingredients were rather fresh and tasted quite nice;; Of course you can't compare with restaurant standards ( for the price of : RM 26.90/adult) but I would say that its far better than other bbq buffet restaurants.. Anyone thinks otherwise???..Different types of mushrooms are also available in the selection..

Finally, we arrive at the grilled section. Note: If you reach too early, most of the grilled stuff are not served yet..There's grilled prawns, big shellfish with garnishing (taste pretty much like oysters to me but it can be quite a mouthful if you're not up for the taste), grilled fish and shisamo (those small egg fishes which you normally find in japanese restaurants).. however, not all of them have eggs... And finally, at 7.30pm we were able to get a plate of the grilled lamb.. There was a long queue for it, so like others, we rushed to the line in hopes of getting a good grilled lamb... It was rather disappointing as they only allowed us to have a small plate of grilled lamb each (with black pepper sauce) and it was full with fats and bones.. It only tasted okay....
At the end, we went for some ice cream and fruits for desserts which was the usual stuff...On our way out, the place was awfully packed at 8pm.

In my opinion, the Tasty Pot BBQ Steambot Buffet Restaurant at Sunway is okay for the 1st time but I would not return to it if given a choice... Tho, it could be a suitable place for reunions with friends.... Conclusion,

Lotus Root Peanut Soup

As promised, I will now post up the 2nd post on the 'food' mentioned earlier... As you can see from the title, I have taken the opportunity on a lazy Saturday afternoon to cook something...n *jeng jeng* ...presenting to you my very own version of LOTUS ROOT PEANUT SOUP...

Ingredients used :

2 lotus root (medium sized or up to your preference)
1 Chicken breast
150g Peanuts
6 Dried oysters
2 Dried cuttle fish
Salt (add to taste)
Water (2 litres)

*add red dates as well if you want it to have a stronger taste

Cooking method :

Bring to boil water in a pot. Add chicken breast (or any other part/pork ribs) and let it cook slightly for the scum to float to the surface of the soup and then remove it. Remove the chicken and discard the water.

Bring to boil 2litres of water in a clean pot and add all the other ingredients plus the partially cook chicken breast until it boils. Then lower down the heat and let it simmer for 2 to 3 hours. Lastly, add salt to taste before serving.

Psssstttt.......*here's a little secret for hassle free work*

The easiest method that I have discovered from cooking soups would be to use a crockpot/slowcooker. Seriously... what's easier than preparing everything, dumping it into the pot, pouring in the water and *voila*..get your tasty soup in about 4-5 hours later without even having to look after it??

So, from the method above, after removing the scum from the chicken juz put everything into the crockpot, add boiled water (tip from grandma to make it cook faster) and finally close the lid.. You'll get a YUMMY-licious soup approximately after 4/5 hours...

Well, I have decided to finally start blogging about food...With all the hype going on for blogspots, I have been persuaded to start one as well * ignoring the fact that my finals is in 3weeks time*...oh gawd...hope i won't neglect my finals.... hmmm...but anything can be more interesting than studying ...and i mean ANYTHING from lazing on the bed, to movies or even juz plain driving around... *deng*..

Well, before i begin with the 1st official post of food *sniffs* -the smell from the kitchen is good-, I would just like to state in black & white that 'pi' has promised to help out 50/50 with this blog as well..' sorry guys, just had to state it out so that there is no point of return' ...wakakkaa...
